Professor Dragoș Iliescu presented, on Wednesday, the results of the National Mathematical Literacy Test, explaining that 35% of the population is in a zone of massive risk or limited functioning. “By the end of primary school, Romania is doing much better than we would expect. It seems that something breaks down in middle school, and this seems to accelerate in high school. We start from a functional illiteracy rate of somewhere around 20–25% and reach almost 50% in high school,” he said.
